Port of Long Beach Selects Skire Unifier for
Comprehensive Captial Project Management Solution
Integrated solution platform will help manage cost and performance of a ten-year,
$3 billion capital improvement program
MENLO PARK, Calif., April 20, 2010 – Skire, Inc. (www.skire.com), the leading provider of capital program, facilities, real estate and project portfolio management software, today announced that the Port of Long Beach has selected Skire’s Unifier™ solution to help manage the Port’s ten-year, $3 billion capital improvement program. By replacing the Port’s multiple cost-tracking and reporting systems, the Unifier system will improve the Port’s overall efficiency for project management and cost reporting by creating a common database and business process automation platform with analysis and reporting tools.
The Port of Long Beach, the second busiest seaport in the United States, determined that staff members were spending a considerable amount of time recording, structuring and reporting on cost data because that data was stored in a variety of programs and not easily accessible for making important planning and business decisions. In an effort to improve efficiency, the Port sought to implement a Port-wide Cost Management System (CMS) and Program and Project Management System (PPMS) that would automatically provide complete, accurate and timely information. The Port needed a solution that would provide staff access to all cost data, enabling them to analyze project financial performance, estimate and control future costs and, ultimately, let staff focus on their core jobs rather than spending endless hours seeking data.
The Port’s primary objectives for the initiative were to improve program management, specifically to deliver visibility and controls around budget, cost and schedule. The Port believes Unifier will improve overall efficiency and project management effectiveness for all of these components by capturing cost and labor data as close to the source as possible, providing accurate and timely information.
Unifier will enable the Port to improve organizational efficiency and prepare for future capital improvement projects by integrating a variety of data and presenting it in real-time. With Unifier, the Port will:
- Capture cost and labor data as close to the source as possible,
- Provide complete, timely and accurate project and program cost reports,
- Support process improvements such as invoicing and time recording, and
- Handle both the CMS and PPMS requirements, eliminating the need for separate applications.
Unifier will also provide a critical function for the Port by helping manage cash flow on major projects, which is necessary to secure future funds from bond programs and other sources. The Port is able to leverage the real-time cost and project data provided by Unifier to increase the accuracy and frequency of projecting cash flow and project managers are able to re-forecast plans based on feedback from other departments at the Port.
A key factor in the Port’s selection of Skire was Unifier’s flexibility and configurability. Unifier eliminates the requirement for specialized outside vendors to modify and manage the application throughout its lifecycle, meaning that the Port will have the ability to change workflow processes as their needs change without requiring custom programming.
“We are excited to partner with the Port of Long Beach to support its goal of unifying multiple tracking systems into one, thereby helping the Port make better planning decisions, manage cash flow effectively and provide improved predictability,” said Trenton Brown, executive vice president for Skire. “With the current projected influx of investment in transportation projects nationwide, public agencies need to implement a comprehensive project controls system to manage the scope, cost and schedule of capital improvement programs. Skire’s Unifier solution coupled with our vast expertise in the transportation industry, which we have developed with recent customers such as Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, as well as long-time customers such as Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and Orange County John Wayne Airport; make us a valuable partner to have at the table when planning capital expansion programs.”
